The Thomas
Square Historic District
When
colonial Savannah was developing, the Thomas Square District was
forest and marshland
which was slowly converted to farms and plantations. Street car
lines opened up this
area for residential development in the late 1800's. A large section
south of 37th street was a privately owned botanical
garden. The only remaining relics of the garden include the two
stone gate houses located at Bull and Victory Drive, which now house
Savannah's Park & Tree Department.
The push for
residential development peaked in the 1920's, making Thomas Square
an architectural and historical transition area between Savannah's
Victorian and Ardsley Park Districts. Thomas Square developed into
a self-contained and economically diverse neighborhood. While some
houses were modest two-story wood frame buildings, large apartment
buildings and single family residences, designed by well-known architects
were also built.
Today, Thomas Square Trolley is one of Savannah's most active areas
of restoration and redevelopment.
Under the Rainbow
is proud to be a part of this district, which is home to Savannah's
main public library, The Gingerbread House, world-famous Elizabeth's
on 37th restaurant, several florist shops, antique malls, and art
galleries. The exciting Starland Dairy Design Center is also currently
under creation three blocks from our Inn.
